Why a Retractable Leash Is NOT the Same as a Long Line Lead
Share
Many dog owners assume that a retractable dog leash and a long line dog lead serve the same purpose, but they are actually very different tools. I, for one, find it so frustrating that my sister, who fully supports my business still uses a retractable lead every single day. No matter how many Zhani Leads I give her, they just sit on her table, unused!
While both offer more freedom than a standard dog leash, a long line training lead provides far greater safety, control, and reliability, especially for recall training or when exploring new environments.
A long line dog lead allows you to manually control the slack, prevent sudden lunges and reel your dog in safely. In contrast, a retractable dog leash relies on a spring-loaded mechanism, which can be dangerous. The thin cord can snap if a strong dog pulls, the locking mechanism is prone to failure (a common issue with retractable dog leashes), and when fully extended, owners lose the ability to react quickly in emergencies.
I am definitely not the only one who has tried to convert someone from the “retractable leash gang”! Cora the Collie’s best friend’s owner was using a retractable leash on a German Shepherd, if you ask me, a total disaster waiting to happen. Thankfully, Cora’s mum managed to convince him to make the switch to a Zhani Long Line Dog Lead!
A retractable leash also does nothing to support proper training. It actually encourages leash pulling, as dogs quickly learn that pulling extends the leash. It also does not allow for controlled corrections like a long line training lead, and the constant tension makes loose-leash walking training even harder.
If you want to give your dog freedom while keeping them safe and reinforcing obedience training, a long line lead is by far the better choice. It provides more control, safer handling, and better recall training, all without the risks associated with a retractable dog leash.
